TO: Beams Division Personnel

FROM:John Marriner

SUBJECT: Response of Personnel to Emergencies and Injuries

This memo is a summary of the basic actions that Division personnel should take in the event of an emergency. An emergency is, after all, a rare occurrence and people do tend to forget these things. In the heat of the moment, they all too often fail to remember to call Extension 3131 promptly.

Please contact Barry Fritz or Ray Lewis if you have a question on this.

REPONSE TO EMERGENCIES

In case of an emergency situation (e.g., fire, chemical spill, with or without injury):

RESPONSE TO EMERGENCIES INVOLVING INJURIES OR ILLNESSES

If injury is serious:

If injury/illness is minor:

Do not attempt to clean up any blood from an injury, unless you are the injured party and the spill is small. Call the Communication Center at 3414 to request clean-up of blood, unless the Fire Department has already initiated cleanup or notification.

PERSONNEL ACCOUNTABILITY

Avoid working alone whenever possible (i.e., use the "buddy system" or "two person rule"). Adhere to local and division procedures for the two-person rule. If you must work alone, be sure your supervisor is aware that you are working alone.

Be familiar with and follow all emergenccy warning signals and instructions. Notices on these signals are posted throughout the Laboratory. If there is an evacuation signal, evacuate immediately. Remain in the area until the Fire Department arrives and you are released.
